9. Popular in the international labour market and a good local labour market

The attractiveness of the Netherlands as a popular place for expats is confirmed in a recent survey by HsBC which revealed that the Netherlands ranks 3rd place in Europe (survey 2009).

Expat surveys also revealed that the Netherlands has the highest longevity for expats. More than 82% of expats now living in the Netherlands have been here for three or more years. The Netherlands is supportive to expats through amongst others the 30% allowance ruling, which offers employers an opportunity to grant a tax free reimbursement to employees of approximately 30% of their salary.

In 2008 the “Expatcenter” opened to all Amsterdam based companies who qualify for the knowledge migrant ruling. The expat center is a one-stop-shop for knowledge migrants enabling them, in one appointment, to collect their residence permit and simultaneously complete the necessary registration with the city municipality of Amsterdam or Amstelveen. shortly after registration, the applicant will also receive their citizen service number by post.

The Dutch labour market in general is characterized by:
 ■ a low level of unemployment (5,3% of working population in 2009);
 ■ a high level of employee facilities;
 ■ a high level of entrepreneurs (2nd highest ranking at 11,5% of working population);
 ■ a high level of education;
 ■ a good language skills (highest percentage (87% of population over 15 years) of good command of the English language outside an English speaking country).
